Not wanting to end the day on such a depressing note, I stopped in Chehalis on my way back south to stop in on #25's sister engine, #15, which is preserved and operational. #15 is maintained and operated by the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad Association, based in South Chehalis.
When you first arrive, you see this caboose and box car. The caboose has traditionally served at the depot and ticket office for the tourist train, while the boxcar is intended to house a model railroad.
The caboose was originally Union Pacific CA-8 Caboose #25586. It was built by the International Car Company of Kenton, Ohio in December of 1964. It was retired on December 15, 1986 and was donated to the City of Chehalis in January of 1987. Its paint job had deteriorated considerably in recent years, leading to it being in the process of being repainted into its original colors.
The 40-foot boxcar was formerly Milwaukee Road #33283. Its sides feature the Milwaukee Road's distinctive horizontal ribs that were also used on the Milwaukee's passenger cars and cabooses.
