Some of My Model Trains

I never posted these pictures on my old website, but am including them now for completion.

I took these pictures of some of my own HO-scale model trains on February 24, 2006. I was trying out my digital camera’s ability to take close-up pictures. I took these pictures at my apartment in Salem, where I didn’t have my layout, so the models were photographed on top of the refrigerator.

This first group of pictures are of freight cars I had recently purchased and assembled. Most of them were old Front Range kits, except for the first one.

Great Northern covered hopper #171030 is an Atlas model. It was essentially ready-to-run, except for a small bracket at each corner.

Reading boxcar #109301 is an old Front Range kit, assembled pretty much per the instructions. I had to paint the running board silver to match the roof.

Louisville & Nashville boxcar #46307 is another old Front Range kit. I would have painted the running board on this car as well, but I didn’t have this color of blue paint.

Grand Trunk Western boxcar #516516 is another old Front Range kit, assembled per the instructions.

Canadian National boxcar #493493 is another old Front Range kit, assembled per the instructions.

Denver & Rio Grande Western covered hopper #15994 is another old Front Range kit, assembled per the instructions. I am somewhat fond of these Front Range covered hoppers.

Southern Pacific covered hopper #490457 is another old Front Range kit.

The rest of these pictures are of models I already owned, but had with me in Salem and was particularly proud of.

Wisconsin Central boxcar #25003 is an Athearn model. The Pullman-Standard 5344 boxcar was the last all-new freight car model released by Athearn in kit form. It was introduced in 1999 and the Wisconsin Central roadname was released in 2000. This kit featured wire grab irons, which I installed and painted.

GATX tank car #22799 is a Walthers model. This is one of several Walthers Funnel-Flow tank cars I acquired. The wire handrails at the top are a bit of a challenge to assemble. Also, the wire handrails and the top and ends and the wires connecting the two ends had to be painted.

Ontario Carbonate (ACFX) tank car #72630 is a Walthers Funnel-Flow tank car model. It is the same as the GATX car, only it is in white.

Sun Oil Co. (NATX) tank car #23662 is by Model Die Casting. I also have a Walthers Funnel-Flow tank car in the same paint scheme, but with SUNX reporting marks.

Corn Products (CCLX) tank car #1670 is another Walthers Funnel-Flow tank car model. The handrails around the top are probably supposed to be painted yellow, but I wasn’t going to try to match that color.

Union Pacific C44-9W #9703 is an Athearn “Blue Box” kit. I added the pilot plow, wire grab irons (I think I made the ones on top of the nose from scratch), and the numbers in the number boards.

Amtrak P42DC #9 is an Athearn “Blue Box” kit, assembled per the instructions.

Amtrak baggage car #1232 is a Walthers model. The wire grab irons were supplied with the car, but were not installed. I drilled out the holes and installed them.

Union Pacific B40-8 #5648 is a Walthers Trainline model. I did quite a bit of work here, adding grab irons (some of which I made from scratch), sunshades, ditch lights, and rooftop details. I also added the white on the corner handrails and step edges, and the silver on the exhaust stack. My dad put the numbers in the number boards.

Union Pacific B40-8 #5637 is also a Walthers Trainline model. All the work I did to #5646 I also did here.

Union Pacific SW1500 #1183 is an Athearn “Blue Box” model. It is assembled per the instructions. I put numbers in the number boards and colored the lens of the center warning light with a red Sharpie.

Montana Rail Link SD40-2 #265 is an Athearn “Special Edition” model, with pilot plow added and numbers in the number boards. The real #265 is a rebuild SD40.

Southern GP60 #4610 is an Athearn model, with pilot plow added and numbers in the number boards. The real #4610 is a GP59.
