At milepost 1718.36, the trail passes through a rock cut blasted by Great Northern crews with dynamite.

At about milepost 1718.32 there is a view of the active rail line across the Tye River valley. In these pictures, a modern double-stack container train can be seen heading east, soon to enter the Cascade Tunnel at Scenic. Although by the compass we seem to be going in the opposite direction of the train, we are actually heading in the same direction along the rail route. Before 1929, such a train would have been on its way to this point on the trail route. The train is on part of the original route, so a similar view may have been a regular occurrence at the time.
