During the next few days, the other passenger cars were attached to various Amtrak trains to go to their next assignments or be returned to their bases of operation.
The first to depart were Caritas, Colonial Crafts, Silver Lariat, Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium, which were attached to Amtrak's southbound Coast Starlight on October 21, after a trip around the loop at Lake Yard to reverse their direction.
The cars destinations were either Oakland or Los Angeles.
The five cars were switched onto the Coast Starlight by P42DC #170, which was still at Union Station.
Silver Lariat, Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium were scheduled to make a round trip between Oakland and Portola from October 30 to November 1.
Caritas was on its way to Los Angeles and then on to St. Louis on Amtrak's eastbound Texas Eagle, leaving on October 25 and arriving on October 27, to operate on the Kansas City Southern.
