Railroad Mergers in the 20th Century

"Freight railroads in the United States have been proposing mergers since the beginning of this century.  While many of the mergers of the past were intended to ensure the survival of the railroads, the mergers of today make successful railroads even more successful."

Amtrak

Amtrak: Self-sufficient by 2003?

"'There’s something about a train that’s magic.'  If you have ridden a passenger train recently, you might recognize those words as a slogan for Amtrak, our national passenger railroad.  Soon, however, that magic may disappear.  Congress has declared that if Amtrak is not making enough revenue to support itself by 2003, it will be privatized or liquidated.  With less than 2 years before the deadline, Amtrak is still in the red. Can its 'magic' save it, or will the government make Amtrak’s final last call?"

Farewell is not Forever

On May 20, 1956, the Spokane, Portland & Seattle steam locomotive #700 pulled a special train to mark the final run of all SP&S steam locomotives. It was called the Farewell to Steam Excursion. But, it wasn't really the end for #700. On June 10-11, 2006, #700 ran along the Springwater Corridor in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Farewell to Steam Excursion.

Logan & San Miguel Railroad

The Logan & San Miguel is a fictional railroad in central Oregon.  A portion of this railroad is modeled in the basement of my parents' house, specifically, the portion including the railroad's namesake towns, as it would have been in September 1969.  This considers the L&SM to be an actual railroad, even though it is not.  Learn more than you wanted to know about a railroad that isn't real.
