De-Weathering a Boxcar

I never posted these pictures on my old website but am including them now for completion.

I purchased this HO-Scale Athearn “Blue Box” 40-foot Grain Loading Box Car at the Rickreall Grange Model Train Swap Meet in Rickreall, Oregon, on May 5, 2007.

The car had been heavily weathered, but on my 1960’s era layout this would have been a nearly new freight car. However, the price was right, so I bought it with the hopes that I could clean some of the weathering off.

On May 9, I attempted to clean the weathering off. The pictures on this page show the results. (I didn’t take any before pictures.)

As I recall, I used dish detergent and an old toothbrush, and possibly a little Goo Gone.

I didn’t get all the weathering off, but I cleaned off a lot of it.
