Weyerhaeuser Rosters

I originally posted this information on my old website on March 26, 2009. I have since updated it.

This following link leads to a spreadsheet featuring rosters for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company's railroads in Oregon and Washington, including the Weyerhaeuser Woods Railroad, the common-carrier Chehalis Western, Columbia & Cowlitz, & Oregon, California & Eastern and predecessor logging companies, with links to information and photos. Special thanks to John A. Taubeneck, who provided locomotive roster information that allows this to be a fairly complete roster.

Weyerhaeuser Rosters

Originally I had the rosters on a single webpage with links to pictures of some of the equipment. With the rosters now in spreadsheet form, I am including the links here.

Steam on the Chelatchie Prairie: The Locomotive

The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad's steam locomotive is former Crossett Western Company #10, a 2-8-2T locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company, or Alco, in 1929.

Crossett Western Co. 2-8-2T #10 in Yacolt on May 27, 2010

This is a tank engine, meaning that it does not pull a tender behind it. Instead, it carries its fuel oil and water in large tanks mounted on top of the boiler and behind the cab.

Crossett Western Co. 2-8-2T #10 in Yacolt on May 27, 2010

This was an advantage for branch lines and logging railroads, as it significantly reduced the overall length of the locomotive and allowed it to more easily operate in reverse as there was no tender behind that would otherwise be pushed when operating in reverse.

This was the last locomotive built at Alco's Brooks Works in Dunkirk, New York, and was the next to last piece of railroad equipment built there. (A 12' snow plow for the Southern Pacific would be the last piece of equipment.)

J. Neils Lumber Co. Shay #5

J. Neils Lumber Company 3-Truck Shay #5 at the Illinois Railway Museum on May 23, 2004

J. Neils Lumber Company #5 is a 3-Truck Shay built in May 1929 for use at the J. Neils Lumber Company in Libby, Montana. Shay locomotives were used often in the timber and mining industries due to their ability to operate on poor track and sharp curves. This was because, unlike most steam locomotives that have drive wheels in a rigid frame connected by driving rods, Shays featured geared drive trucks connected to a flexible drive shaft driven by vertical pistons on the right side of the engine (not visible in the picture) similar in a way to an auto or truck drive-train. This gave Shays excellent pulling power, but limited speed, though in most of their applications, speed was not a concern.  In May 1939, the locomotive was transferred to Klickitat, Washington. While in use at Klickitat, the operations there became the Klickitat Log & Lumber Company, part of the St. Regis Paper Company. In May 1964, the locomotive was sold to Ed Donnelley of Hill City, South Dakota, for use on the Black Hills Central tourist railroad. In June 1965 the locomotive moved to the Mid-Continent Railroad Museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin for a short time before coming to the Illinois Railway Museum on July 23, 1965. The locomotive was the first operating steam locomotive at IRM, with its first museum operations on December 29, 1967. In August 1969, the locomotive was formally donated to the museum.
