North Star Rail's #3101 and #202 were coupled to the eastbound Empire Builder, which again made them difficult to photograph. This view of #202 was taken from the Broadway Bridge.

Amtrak P42DC #170 was added to the eastbound Empire Builder to provide extra muscle to pull MKT Business Car #403, Sleeping Car Minnesota River, Super Dome #53 & Skytop Observation Cedar Rapids, which doubled the regular length of the Empire Builder's Portland section.

Amtrak #170 also had GBRX #800224 Goombay Sunrise with it when it took Caritas, Colonial Crafts, Silver Lariat, Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium around the loop at Lake Yard and coupled them onto the Coast Starlight, but it wasn't coupled to the train and stayed with #170 as it went beck to Track 1.

This car was originally built by Pullman-Standard in 1950 as Chesapeake & Ohio #2500 Blue Ridge Club. It is one of eight such blunt-end observation cars built for Chesapeake & Ohio. It originally had 5 double bedrooms, a buffet and a 26-seat observation lounge.

In late 1961 the car was rebuilt into a dormitory-diner configuration with three crew bedrooms, a kitchen and a 28 seat dining room and renumbered to #1923. It later became Amtrak #8200.

The GBRX reporting mark belongs to Greenbrier, the parent company of Portland railcar builder Gunderson, so Portland may be this car's home base, considering it didn't leave with any of the other private passenger cars, despite being moved around and turned on the loop more than once.

I don't know the significance of the name Goombay Sunrise, but Goombay is the name of a drum and a musical style in the Bahamas, and a small bay on the island of St. Lucia, so perhaps that is in some way related.

4449 Heads East for Train Festival 2009: Chesapeake & Ohio #3 Chapel Hill

…Continued from Caritas.

Chapel Hill was built in 1922 in St. Charles, Missouri by American Car & Foundry as the private car Hussar for Post Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, stock broker and banker Edward Francis Hutton, who used the car to travel from their main home in New York City to their winter estate in Palm Beach and their summer home in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. They divorced in 1935 and Post kept the car. She promptly married Joseph E. Davies, a Washington D.C. attorney who was appointed US ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1937, and when they moved to the Soviet Union they sold the car to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.

C&O installed an air conditioning system and the car became Office Car #2 and was renumbered several times before Office Car #3 became final. The car was modernized in 1957. In 1971 DeWitt Chapple, Jr. bought the car and named it Chapel Hill after his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Chapple was a founder of the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners. In 2005, Jeffrey & Tracy McClorey became part owners of the Chapel Hill with Chapple.
